The Adolescent program at Fiore centers around meaningful real-world projects developed by the adolescents in the community. A focus on social relationships and young adult independence offers learning in a developmentally appropriate and enticing way. 

 

A Montessori Adolescent program is made up of three main components: projects, seminars, and production and exchange.

Projects

​

Students work with their teachers (called guides) to develop projects centered around contributing to society and stewardship of the planet. These projects are interdisciplinary and incorporate research, community outreach, science, math, social studies, and language in real, purposeful ways.

Seminars

​

Regular academic seminars led by content-area experts, allow students to dive into and receive instruction on important academic concepts.

Production and Exchange

​

A key component of the Adolescent Program is something known as production and exchange or "occupations". The students design, plan, and run a business together. With support from their guides, they are responsible for all aspects of the business including creating a product or offering a service, managing money and expenses, daily operational tasks, and advertising. Fiore's Adolescent program will work in collaboration with our neighbors, the Potomac Vegetable Garden, to grow, care for, and sell produce. There are also plans to develop both a school cafe and bike shop which will be run and managed by the students.
